Painting in oils or acrylics, Simon Birtall seeks to imbue his work with a sense of spontaneity. He takes inspiration from any source, be it ‘art’ or otherwise, traditional or modern. His painting technique is thus under constant development.
Simon’s recent work concentrates on the study of still life subjects from life, and embraces experiments in the use of alternative surfaces to canvas such as recycled packaging. Colour theory is fundamental to his working process; he therefore favours subjects that offer the opportunity to enjoy explorations of colour.
Since 2002 Simon has run a successful ‘Portraits from Photographs’ service, painting or drawing portraits of family, friends or pets from photos. He also runs painting workshops and weekly art classes in Hoylake.
